Software Engineer II, Backend - Production Engineering, Amsterdam

Production Engineers at Uber blend software and systems engineering capabilities to ensure Uber's services run reliably and can scale to meet our significant needs. We are looking for an enthusiastic software engineer to join the team and further advance Uber's production platforms. An engineering role on this team is a great opportunity to work on Uber-scale problems, handling large volumes of traffic and data using cutting-edge technologies.

What the Candidate Will Do

Production Engineering engineers blend capabilities from Backend, Systems, and Reliability Engineering. You’ll be working with internal stakeholders to deeply understand their services and architect solutions to their reliability issues, as well as building tooling and services to aid reliability Uber-wide. Your contributions will directly impact the experience of millions of users worldwide.

You should also be a strategic thinker who can identify efficiencies and develop solutions to improve the production platforms and processes. Additionally, you should have strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication abilities, and be able to effectively collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders.

Typical tasks:

Work with internal stakeholders to develop reliable applications. Look for patterns and opportunities in the behaviors of their services and collaborate on solutions.

Debug Uber-scale reliability issues, working across multiple services and domains to improve availability for our customers.

Collaboratively plan new reliability services/features, write and review code, and develop documentation.

Advocate for Production Engineering and reliability in general across Uber Engineering.

Basic Qualifications

4+ years experience coding with Go, Java, C++ or Python.

4+ years experience building, maintaining, and debugging production services/platforms.

2+ years experience implementing complex software architectures with multiple dependencies.

Experience analyzing, monitoring, and troubleshooting large-scale, high-traffic distributed systems.

Comfortable communicating with technical teams and leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write detailed technical documents.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Proven experience of shipping high-quality product features on schedule and with high velocity.

Experience assisting engineers in solving production incidents, and providing guidance during postmortems.

Flexibility to work with stakeholders in different timezones.
