Join us to shape the future of ultra‑fast, space‑based data transfer. This PhD position focuses on developing and experimentally validating high‑tech optical ground‑station technologies for the STARS: Smart 3D Tomographic Adaptive Optics for Turbulence‑Resilient Optical Communication Systems project, which aims to enable enhanced reliability and performance of laser satellite communication with geostationary satellites.Responsibilities

Develop and experimentally validate opto‑mechatronic and opto‑electronic systems necessary for the concept. Conduct laboratory testing and measurement of individual laser beams. Actively control and synchronize laser transmissions to achieve constructive interference at the satellite receiver.Qualifications

MSc degree (or equivalent) recognized in the Netherlands. Background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field. Demonstrated experience with experimental research. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Proficiency in English (minimum B2, preferably C1/C2).Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. A security screening may be part of the selection procedure due to knowledge protection regulations. Conditions of Employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4‑year period of employment in principle, comprising two contracts: an initial 1.5‑year contract with a progress assessment within 15 months, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years if performance requirements are met. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, ranging from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, for a full‑time contract (38 hours). Compensation includes an 8 % holiday allowance and an end‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %. TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work‑costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
