Researcher in Training (PhD Candidate), Leiden
Advertentietekst
Overview Within a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, immunologists and bioinformaticians, you will work on an integrated research programme combining computational analyses and laboratory experiments. In the first part of the project, you will analyse large‑scale human transcriptomic datasets to identify genes specifically expressed in hypocretin‑producing neurons. The next phase will use structural modelling to investigate protein fragments that may bind strongly to the HLA molecule associated with narcolepsy. In the experimental phase, you willtest the most promising candidates using T‑cell assays, flow cytometry and functional immune assays, covering the entire research cycle from experimental design to publication.

Key Responsibilities

Analysing large‑scale transcriptomic datasets and identifying candidate targets for narcolepsy research.

Investigating protein‑HLA interactions using structural modelling, AI methods and molecular simulations.

Setting up and performing T‑cell assays and immunological experiments using patient material from the Narcolepsy Biobank.

Presenting research findings at national and international conferences and writing scientific publications as part of your PhD thesis.

Qualifications

A master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Immunology, Neuroscience or a related field, with demonstrated affinity for immunology and neuroscience.

Interest in both computational and experimental techniques.

Willingness to learn new techniques, such as molecular modelling.

Strong communication skills in English; Dutch is a plus, but not required.

Experience with RNA‑seq analysis, Python/R, molecular modelling, immunological assays or flow cytometry is an advantage.

Benefits

End‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %.

Holiday allowance, bicycle scheme, sports budget and home‑working allowance.

Excellent commuting reimbursement scheme.

Affiliation with the ABP pension fund with at least 70 % of contribution paid by LUMC.

Employment Details

Salary ranges from€3,108 to €3,939 gross per month (scale PRO, Collective Labour Agreement for University Medical Centres) for a full‑time position.

Four‑year PhD trajectory with an intended start date in mid‑2026.

Appointment is for 36 hours per week; 0.9–1.0 FTE open for discussion.
