German National Graduate Trainee in Robotics, Noordwijk-Binnen

Overview German National Graduate Trainee in Robotics at ESA’s ESTEC (Noordwijk, Netherlands). The role supports the Automation and Robotics Laboratories (ARL) within the Mechatronics and Optics Division.

Responsibilities

Conception of novel uses and designs in space missions.

Definition, design and engineering of robotic systems.

Breadboarding and demonstration of A&R systems.

Analysis and verification of existing A&R systems, participation in testing campaigns and analogue field tests.

Technology development in fields such as robot perception, control, autonomy, motion, robot‑user interfacing and ground testing.

Feasibility assessments of new space A&R concepts.

Mathematical modelling and simulations.

Research and integration of novel sensors for robot perception.

Algorithmic design and programming implementation, including integration inside robot control architecture.

New concepts for surface mobility (kinematic suspension, wheels, legs, hybrids) and robotic arm manipulators.

Application of AI techniques for robot GNC and autonomy.

Operational readiness, organisation and extension of lab facilities.

Education Just completed or in the final year of a master’s degree in robotics or a related engineering field.

Additional Requirements Completed or in final year of a university or graduate degree in robotics, computer science, mechatronics, mechanical, control or space engineering. A solid foundation in mathematics and physics, along with strong grasp of system aspects and basic engineering domains, is strongly desirable. Proficiency in computer‑aided engineering tools and several programming languages is an important asset. Good interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work in multicultural environments (independently and as part of a team), and prior international team experience are also sought.
